Glass Jars to Outdoor Lights

diy-garden-lights-cherylstyle

Why settle for ordinary outdoor lighting when you can make your own for under $15?
Our upcycled garden lights are the perfect way to turn old jars into works of art that are both beautiful and practical!
Place rubber bands of varied widths around a jar to create a design of your choice.
Have more than one idea in mind? Make several different lights and group them as a centerpiece or line them along a walkway.
Once you’ve banded your jars, apply spray paint evenly, let dry then add a second coat of paint.
When completely dry, remove the rubber bands carefully. Add aluminum craft wire for hanging on a shepherd hook or a flowerpot hook for the deck. Use real candles or battery operated tea lights.
Your unique upcycled garden lights will create a welcome ambiance to any outdoor area.

DIY painted upcycled garden lights instructions

what you’ll need

let’s do it

  • let jars soak in warm, soapy water
  • remove labels from jar and let dry
  • decide on pattern you want on jar
  • place rubber band one at a time around jar
TIP: use rubber bands that fit snuggly to the jar
  • use finger to angle rubber band, rotate jar to create even line
  • place next rubber band parallel to the other
TIP: if you don’t have thick rubber bands, place 2 to 3 side by side
  • continue with rubber bands until jar is covered with bands or desired pattern
  • repeat for all jars
  • place jars upside down on flat surface in well-ventilated area
TIP: use a closed cardboard box to elevate jars while painting

  • spray paint jars lightly and in several coats to avoid dripping
  • spray entire jar and let dry
  • repeat with second coat of paint and let dry
  • turn jar over and carefully remove rubber bands
  • wrap 2 pieces of wire around jar neck just under lid groove (see sketch to the right or click here for more detail)
TIP: be delicate while wrapping wire as the paint scratches easily
  • wrap another piece of wire up and over jar for handle
  • twist wire to secure and trim off excess
  • decorate neck of jar with twine if desired
TIP: keep twine away from lit candles
  • secure shepherd hooks in ground
  • hang jars and admire

Make Your Own Spice Mixes

Make your own Ranch, Dry Onion Soup Mix and Taco Seasoning and store in small mason jars....This is soooo much HEALTHIER than those you buy at the store!! They contain a TON of stuff that is not good for you!!

Taco Seasoning:
1/2 cup chili powder
1/4 cup onion powder
1/8 cup ground cumin
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon sea salt
Put ingredients into a jar and shake.

Dry Onion Soup Mix:
2/3 cup dried, minced onion
3 teaspoons parsley flakes
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons turmeric
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper

Mix all ingredients in a jar, then give the jar a good shake. I’d recommend shaking the jar to mix the ingredients well before each use.
Use 4 tablespoons in a recipe in place of 1 packet of onion soup mix. Store this in a dry, cool place.

Ranch:
5 tablespoons dried minced onions
7 teaspoons parsley flakes
4 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Mix together and store in an air tight container.
For dressing: Mix 2 tablespoons dry mix with 1 cup mayonnaise and 1 cup buttermilk or sour cream.
For dip: Mix 2 tablespoons dry mix with 2 cups sour cream.
Mix up a few hours before serving, so the flavors all blend.

HOMEMADE Lemon Water!

Ball Mason Jar Beverage Holder With Lid

Materials Needed:
Mason jar lid
Seal or Grommet
Drill and 3/8" drill bit
Wire cutter
How to do it:

1. Keep the lid on the mason jar, use the drill bit to drill a hole wherever you want.
2. You'll most likely have rough edges, so use the wire cutters to snip off any edges sticking out and try to make the hole as flat as possible.
3. Press, pinch and push the seal into the hole, carefully.

Mason Jar Organizers

by HEATHER on JANUARY 11, 2010
Materials: Jars with Lids, power screw gun, metal drill bit, 3/4″ screws (must be shorter than wood you’re drill to), tape measure, and cupboard or shelf to affix to bottom.

I used pint and quart size antique jars; use whatever size and style works for you.
If you want the blue mason jars ACE HARDWARE.
Just make sure your lids fit snuggly.
Wash and dry.
Collect the rest of your materials. Find a good work surface. If you’re like me.. and your kitchen table is your work bench please find a scrap piece of wood so you don’t drill right through it. (hubby LOVES when this happens!)
Another tip: if you’re not handy (YET!) with the power tools and you’re trying to convince the DH or other to help you.
Drill a hole in the center of each lid.
Measure and mark on your cupboard where you will be drilling the covers to.
*update* one of my brilliant readers figured out that if you drill TWO
holes in each lid and screw in at two separate places the lid won’t spin!! Which is awesome because
then you don’t need two hands to unscrew the jar!
Fill those jars! Whatever you think is handy for you.. you can always change on the fly.
Remember that for some things.. oils etc.. it is best not to keep these near heat.
I didn’t worry about it too much though as it is still an improvement over my last system!
FINISHED PRODUCT!
(plus flopped bread to boot)

Bird Feeder Jar

Mason Jar Feeder

Mason Jar Feeder

This feeder is cute as a bug! Who knew a mason jar and some wire could look like a masterpiece? Don Hutchings makes these feeders, which are perfect for outdoor bird feeding or even an indoor decoration. Instead of welding, Don suggests using J-B Weld, a product you can buy at home improvement and hardware stores.
Make it yourself:
  • Don suggests using 6 feet of 9-gauge wire to wrap around the jar, and 15 feet of 14- to 16-gauge wire for the wings.
  • Wrap 9-gauge wire around the jar, leaving 2 inches at the end.
  • Roll the next wire into a 10-inch circle, leaving 18 inches at the end. Squeeze the circle in the middle, using the remaining length to wrap around the coil.
  • Use two washers as the eyes. Connect them with J-B Weld and let dry. Then attach with J-B Weld to the front of the jar.
  • Apply substantial amount of J-B Weld to the bottom of wings and attach them to the wire around the jar.
Buy it: Don sells these gorgeous feeders in his Etsy shop along with other recycled garden art. Or visit hiswebsite.
