Diaper cakes are popular as baby shower gifts because they are practical and can be used as a centerpiece for the party. You can buy diaper cakes from various online sources, but it's not too difficult to make your own.
The exact supplies you will need for a diaper cake depend upon how large you want your cake to be and how much money you want to spend on the project. At a minimum, however, you’ll need diapers, rubber bands, clear stretch jewelry cord, ribbon, a stuffed animal, and a sheet of cardboard or a cake plate to display your finished baby diaper cake on. You may wish to include rattles, board books, teething rings, baby wash, baby lotion, diaper rash cream, baby wipes, or baby bibs in your diaper cake centerpiece as well.

diaper cake directions
Use newborn or size 1 diapers to create your diaper cake.

Open your package of diapers. One at a time, roll the diapers up tight. Start from the front of the diaper and roll it toward the back. Secure with a rubber band. While most diaper cake directions specify using disposable diapers, you can use the same process to make a cloth diaper cake if that is what the parents would prefer. Diaper cake ideas are intended to be flexible so you can adapt the project to fit your needs.

Cut a length of clear stretch jewelry cord to the size of an adult woman’s necklace. (You can actually use a beaded necklace for this step if you want to include a gift for mom in the baby shower diaper cake, but this isn’t necessary.) Place items such as baby lotion, baby wipes, or larger baby toys on your cardboard and in the middle of the stretch cord circle. Insert the rolled up diapers one by one until you’ve created a circular shape for your diaper cake centerpiece.

Add a second layer of rolled up disposable diapers, making sure you can’t see any of the inner rolls on the outside of your baby diaper cake. Use a piece of thick ribbon to cover all of the exposed rubber bands and tie a decorative bow around the completed baby shower diaper cake layer.

Place a length of clear stretch cord around the exposed items you used to start the bottom layer of your diaper cake. Insert rolled diapers to form the second tier of the baby shower diaper cake. Tie with ribbon when you are finished.

Finish off your diaper cake with the stuffed animal of your choice.

Top your diaper cake with the stuffed animal of your choice. A teddy bear is always a suggested option in instructions for how to make a diaper cake step by step, but you could choose something that coordinates with the baby’s nursery theme if you wish. For example, a stuffed monkey would be a good diaper cake topper if the baby has a jungle nursery theme and you want to make a safari diaper cake. Baby boy diaper cakes could include a pop and push toy car instead of a stuffed animal.
