Natural tips to Avoid Mosquitoes

NATURAL TIPS TO AVOID MOSQUITOES

~ Crush parsley & mix into spray bottle of apple cider vinegar.
~ Use fan outside & stand close to it.
~ Rosemary & sage placed on coals while grilling or camping helps keep them away.
~ Mix 1 part garlic juice (freshly squeezed) - 5 parts water. Saturate  dish cloths in solution & hang around patio when  family is outside.
~ Don't have water sources - where females lay their eggs- birdbaths, wading pools, pet water. If you have any of these change water 3 x week. Use "old" water on your plants.
~Wear light clothing. BUT some bugs are attracted to bright floral colors too.
~Mosquitoes dislike: catnip, rosemary, citronella grass, lavender, cinnamon & peppermint. Use them in your yard landscaping. Remember-MINT plants over take everything, think of using them in containers on path or patio.
~Scented perfumes & soaps scream "come here" to many bugs. Avoid them. Also deodorants & hair  products.
~ Mosquitoes are MOST active @ sunrise & sunset, avoid being outside 30 minutes before & after dawn & dusk.

Mosquitoes and Garlic

Swarms of Mosquitoes on my patio led me to an old home remedy - Did you know that chopped up garlic makes mosquitoes disappear? I buy minced, dried garlic at local Fiesta grocery stores and sprinkle it around on my patio. I have to stand back as I am using it - mosquitoes will literally swarm out of your plants and bushes to get away from the smell. Works like a charm!! Going to try this next year.

ALSO plant garlic around areas you want to keep mosquitoes away from.

MOSQUITO TRAP

Photo: Modern technology has brought us many benefits, including mosquito traps that cost hundreds of dollars, but sometimes we overlook simple solutions to difficult challenges such as mosquito control. When it comes to controlling pests, research tends to focus on chemicals or concepts that can be patented. Unless someone can make a profit from an idea, the public may never become aware of it.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:

Items needed:

200 ml water
50 grams of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
2-liter plastic bottle

Or US conversion:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.
